Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose a new prediction method for bi-directionally predicted pictures, B-pictures. In this new method, blocks in B-pictures can be encoded by referring to the previous B-pictures in addition to I- or P-pictures as forward reference pictures. The aim is to improve coding performance and obtain better subjective and objective quality than that seen with conventional coding methods at the same bit rate. Details of the proposed method are presented, followed by simulation results. In our simulation, the proposed method is implemented into the H.26L codec. The simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the bit rate of B-pictures by up to 12 % compared to the conventional method.
