Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study compares phonetic properties of heroes' and villains' voices in Japanese anime. It was hypothesized that villains' voices would exhibit phonetic properties of negative emotions, and the hypothesis was confirmed by an auditory analysis using Laver's framework for voice quality description : a majority of villains were perceived to exhibit supraglottal constriction, which was predicted as phonetic properties of negative emotions. A perceptual experiment was conducted where native Japanese speakers listened to content-masked anime voices with varying supraglottal states and rated their impressions. The results suggest that speakers with non-neutral supraglottal states (i.e., supraglottal constriction or larynx lowering) were rated negatively regardless of their original roles in cartoons.
