Natural Language Processing for Barrier-Free Broadcasting Services

Abstract(in English) The radio and television broadcasting are communication methods which are indispensable for the modern human life. Since these broadcasting services use sense of seeing and hearing, people with seeing or hearing difficulties can not enough enjoy the services. Foreigners who have difficulties to understand broadcasting language can not also enjoy full of them. "Barrier-free broadcasting services" aim to provide the methods to overcome the communication barrier. The paper shows our research activities on speech and natural language technologies for barrier-free broadcasting services. They are closed-caption and sign language services for the people with hearing difficulties, narration and tactile services for the people with seeing difficulties, foreign language services for the foreigners and a TV control system by the speech input and output for the elderly people.
