Abstract(in English) | In this paper, we propose an environment recognition system for the visually impaired people by using a note-PC and a small CCD camera. We have focused on character information because characters are one of important cues in scene recognition. The system captures an image by a camera connected to a note-PC. First, characters in the image are extracted by using features of a character, and those of character line such as similar aspect ratio and linear arrangement. Next, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) analyzes the extracted character regions and outputs recognized characters. We conducted experiments with 400 real images, we had satisfactory results the extraction rate of perfect character line is 67.9%. Although character lines of 25.7% were partially missing, these missings would be easily supplemented by human knowledge when charcter recognition was carried out. We conducted a field expriment on a subway station, and confirmed this system can provide useful information to a user. |
