Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Semiconductor electroabsorption modulators (EAMs) have been developed for 40Gb/s optical transmission systems because of their advantages including compactness, low drive and high-speed operation. Even though EAMs are subject to frequency chirping due to refractive index changes with RF bias, it is well-known that the chirping can be reduced by applying an offset bias to the modulator. No discussions have yet been made, however, on the details of transmission capability provided by the offset-bias chirp reduction technique for 40Gb/s NRZ optical transmission systems. In this paper we demonstrate the performance of a passive waveguide-integrated EAM fabricated by the butt-joint technique, and its transmission capability as evaluated by transmission simulation that takes modulation-induced dynamic chirping obtained from measured results into account.
