Self-Organization of Orientation Columns by Introducing a Fluctuation of Threshold

Abstract(in English) This paper proposed a neural network model in which orientation map is self-organized. We believe that thresholds of each cell are always fluctuating while the cells are recieving inputs, and introduced this mechanism in our model. Although varieties of self-organizing neural network models of orientation map have been proposed so far, most of them do not consider retinotopy. Our model consists of a three layered network and has variable inter- and intra-layer connections. We use a learning rule with synaptic competition to modify the inter-layer connections. Each cell in the output layer recieves excitatory connections from the cells in its vicinity and inhibitory connections from the cells in the surround. The inhibitory intra-layer connections are modified through anti-Hebbian learning, and the excitatory intra-layer connections are modified in such a way that the retio of the sum of inhibitory and excitatory intra-layer connections be kept constant.
