Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Through a detailed analysis of results of listening examinations, the empirical knowledge regarding the characteristic errors in identifying the Chinese tones by the Japanese students was reconfirmed systematically. Referring to this knowledge, a CAI system for self-teaching of listening Chinese tones was developed. In this system, changes in fundamental frequency of the four tones were extracted from speech samples of mono- and bi-syllabic word lists, and pictures of the pitch patterns were utilized as visual display. By choosing suitably exercise, review and examination modes, the self-teaching can be executed effectively. It was ascertained that the errors in listening was reduced as an effect of self-teaching by this system. Multi-phasic data on the acoustical properties of the Chinese tones played an important role in designing the system.
