Standardization of Geographic Information Systems

Abstract(in English) Geographic Information System (GIS) has become greatly popular in 1990's. GIS is really a very important social infrastructure, and, constructing and maintaining geographical information requires huge investments. To make advanced use of such geographical information, information technology, especially database technology, should be incorpoated into GIS, and this is exactly the issue which the current standardization work of geographic inforamtion pursue. In this note, recent standardization work of Geographic Information in ISO/TC211 is explained, together with some related standarization activities.
