Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Should a network provide a specified/required Quality Of Service (QOS)? It is still controversial. No public networks have yet provided QOS service to end-users/applications that have individual QOS requirements. Deployment of broadband access is now yielding new services such as streaming TV or multimedia online games, and such services strongly require specific QOS. Reasons that make it difficult to introduce QOS functions in a real network would be from a principle of "Keep it Simple & Stupid" and a business decisions, i.e. cost performance. Overlay network technologies are expected to provide QOS control without modifying existing IP networks. Although overlay network itself is broadly spread today as in P2P applications, the technologies in use are still developing. We here try to address the state of the arts and future research issues on overlay network technologies for QOS control.
