A Rate Control of Streaming over TCP

Abstract(in English) As broadband access becomes available for home users, not only text and still picuture contents, but also stream contents such as video and audio are often used in WWW. HTTP which is used for WWW is implemented over TCP. In TCP, if the stream capacity exceeds the network bandwidth, packets are lost and retransmission occurs. Retransmission causes delay. If the receiver experiences buffer underfiow because of the delay, the video or audio play will be stopped. In this paper, we propose a rate control algorithm over TCP which avoids the buffer underfiow, and achieves a high bit rate. The validity of our algorithm is shown by simulations.
