Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Progressive image transmission is receiving attention for application in interactive image communication over low-bandwidth channels. In progressive image transmission, an image is transmitted through several stages. A low-resolution image is first transmitted. Upon the user's request, the low-resolution image can be refined with futher transmission until the original image is losslessly reproduced. One important class of progressive image transmission techniques is based on pyramid data structure. Progressive image transmission is achieved by sending the pyramids starting from top level to the bottom level. In this paper, we form the pyramid based on an adaptive coding algorithm by using a quadtree-based variable block size region segmentation. The proposed method realizes the data-dependent pyramid data structure. Thus, we can obtain the high-quality image at early stage.
