Estimation of the Cause of Younger Babies' Cries by Frequency Analyses of Their Voice

Abstract(in English) A method for estimating why a baby is crying is proposed using frequency analyses of the voice, especially for younger babies from 3 to 4 months old. Here, two causes, hunger and sleepiness, are considered, because they are very common. Authors clarified before that the frequency distributions of the cries in a hunger state and a sleepy one are different and proposed a rule-based system to classify the hungry cries and sleepy ones automatically for elder babies above or equal to 5 months old. As to younger babies, the same rule cannot be applied, since the frequency distribution of the cries is different from that of elder babies. In this paper, a new rule to classify the hungry cry and sleepy one is proposed for younger babies from 3 to 4 months old using the frequency analyses. It is clarified that the frequency spectrum of younger babies' cries keeps to take large values in high frequency region when the baby is hungry, while the values becomes small in low frequency region, when the baby is sleepy. Using this tendency, a rule-based system to classify them is proposed, and computer simulations show that about 80% of younger babies' cries are correctly classified.
