Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A frame-rate or frame-interval manipulation is one of the effective techniques utilized in the area of video coding. Although some adaptive frame insertion techniques have been recently proposed, they often introduce annoying artifact caused by a lack of "motion smoothness". The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel adaptive frame insertion technique that generates image sequences with the high subjective quality in the temporal direction. To this end, we first evaluate the relation among "the necessity of frame insertion", a motion feature, and the frame rate through a subjective assessment test. Then, a frame insertion algorithm based on the evaluation is proposed. Another advantage of the proposed technique lies in the fact that the mean opinion score (MOS) for a sequence generated by our technique can be easily estimated by a very simple equation. We have verified the performance and the advantages of the proposed technique by evaluating the MOS for totally 12 test sequences.
