Abstract(in English) For VLSI for digital consumer appliances which integrate multimedia signal processing, directly-opposed performances of high-speed, low power consumption, low cost and short TAT (turn around time) are strongly required. Especially for VLSIs for digital cameras that feature image compression/decompression, target performances demanded from system applications are beyond the semiconductor trend of performance progress. Therefore variety of approaches in order to meet such demands is essential. In this paper, as an example, Motion-JPEG2000 codec processor and 720P-ASP MPEG-4 codec processor for HD-movie transmission are described. The Motion-JPEG2000 codec processor performs real time encoding of 1, 440×1, 080 pixels images with the speed of 30 frames per second. For real time processing of HD-movie, we have introduced "double data-BUS and double encoder structure" to reduce in JPEG2000 encoder computation load and data-BUS bandwidth, and "parallel processing of EBCOT and packet header generation process" to speed up EBCOT processing. This processor has been fabricated in a 0.18μm 5-layer CMOS metal process. The chip is 9.2mm×9.2mm in size. Max core operating frequency is 54MHz and the data-BUS operating frequency is 108MHz. The power consumption is 900mW when supplied with 1.8V and 54MHz.
