Capacity Planning of Survivable Wavelength-Routed Networks for Increase of Traffic Loads

抄録(英) We propose a cost-effective capacity planning methodology of survivable wavelength-routed networks for increase of traffic load, which is originally optimized for initial traffic loads. The capacity planning is based upon routing and wavelength assignment by heuristic algorithm, which comprises two steps. First, the network is optimized for an initial traffic load minimizing the total cost, which is the sum of costs of the link, multiplexing, and optical cross-connect (OXC). Secondly, additional traffic loads are accommodated without disrupting or reconfiguring original connections either by using idle network resources left unused after the optimization for an initial traffic matrix or by adding more resources if the idle resources are not available. The objective is to upgrade a network that accommodates and protects all the traffic increase in the most cost-effective way. The design guarantees the most cost-effective combination of fibers, multiplexers/demultiplexers, and OXCs that upgrades the capacity of the network to a point where all the new lightpath demands can be accommodated with shared-path protection.
