Components for All Optical Data Path Routers

Abstract(in English) Full potential of optical switches can be enjoyed, if all the available bandwidth of, say, WDM is used to transfer each packet and the bandwidth is switched simultaneously. Considering that 1500B packets takes 12ns to transfer at 1Tbps, that high speed optical switches operating with nano seconds of switching time are becoming available and that electric circuits are fast enough for control in nano seconds, it is now possible to construct an all optical data path router. Components to construct the all optical router are discussed. Assuming average packet size of 500B and inter-packet separation of 6ns, a 1Tbps (average effective speed of 400Gps) 4 port all optical data path router can be constructed from 256 1:2 optical switches, power requirement for which is 640W.
