Abstract(in English) When audiences respond to quizzes or auctions in an interactive television program, both networks and servers are congested with corresponding response data. The scope of this paper is in techniques to avoid the congestion when the response data are transmitted over CATV networks using the internet protocols. Firstly, we consider the use of UDP/IP as a lightweight transport protocol, and propose to define a session layer to realize reliable data transmission. We compare experimental results using UDP/IP with those using TCP/IP. Next we propose a novel method to prevent the network congestion. The proposed method is based on reducing UDP/IP header traffic by concatenating several audiences' data to one UDP/IP packet. This function is implemented at the queuing server in CATV station. We experimentally verify the availability of the proposed method and show further improvement in the performance with use of a flow control function at the queuing server.
