Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This report surveys previous studies on QoS (Quality of Service) in multimedia networks and tries to indicate new directions to future work in this area. We first classify the QoS studies into four categories along the protocol stack of the Internet and points out that there exist gaps between the categories. From this point of view, we present some open issues to be addressed and describe the current situation of QoS mapping research, focusing on user-level QoS. We next propose user-level Qos assessment methods based on psychometric analysis and methods of QoS mapping by multiple regression analysis. We further show two studies on multimedia QoS mapping in wireless LANs as examples of the research carried out toward the direction suggested here. In addition, the concept of the mutually compensatory property of multimedia Qos is introduced and formulated in terms of QoS mapping relation between application-level and user-level.
