Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We investigated the effects of head and lighting orientation on the perception of another person's gaze direction using two tasks: discriminating between direct and averted gazes and localizing the actual point where the gaze was directed. A head orientation of 15 degrees induced 0.7 to 1.3degrees shift for "direct" judgment, consistent with the orientation of head. The shift in presented gaze increased with the eccentricity of gaze direction and head orientation. Perceived shift was well described by linear functions of presented head and gaze directions very well. Additionally, the perception of gaze directed towards a light source at 60 degree was shifted in the opposite direction by 2 degrees.
