Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Previous research implies that people with higher social skills interpret the congruence of response latencies in conversation as a sign of cooperation. To investigate this, an experiment evaluating the operator's attitude in a telephone shopping situation was undertaken. Social skill was measured using Horige's (1994) ENDE2. When the response latencies of the operator and customer were similar, participants with higher social skill scores differed from those with lower scores, generally finding the operator 'pleasant' and 'consciencious'. As social skill represents the ability to perform social tasks smoothly, these results suggest that similarity of response latencies is a strategy used in performing social tasks. |
