Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In order to improve the amount of transmitted information via sensory substitute devices, the authors examined tactile perception characteristics of the fingerpad when presenting broadband vibrotactile stimuli. Firstly, the amount of transmitted information of tactile sensations induced by multiple vibratory frequencies and waveforms were measured using a single vibrator. The result showed that the amounts of transmitted information by these parameters were in the range of 1-2 bits. Secondly, with a view to transmit the voice quality information by tactile sensations, an open question and a psychological scaling test of tactile sensations induced by multiple frequencies and waveforms were performed using a multi-channel 2-D tactile display. From the result, most subjects perceived common changes of tactile sensations. The result also showed a guideline to transmit the voice quality.
