Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Visually impaired and blind people have some difficulties in perceiving directly written text through a visual channel. In the situation, they need another information channel, and they usually use either auditory or tactile channel. In this report, we first show current situation for audio-auditory support systems for identifying Kanji characters in a text. We then introduce a concept of "Distinctive expression" for designing the support system for identifying each Kanji. The concept includes usual audio-auditory expression methods for kanji identification, and other methods and information media such as coding method and Braille representation for Kanji. The identifying performance of the support system depends on both system and user characteristics, and is determined by the relation between these two characteristics. We further show certain fundamental issues in designing the support system for Kanji identification.
