Random Number Generation Dysfunction and Frontal Cortex in Schizophrenia

Abstract(in English) Random number generation paradigm requires the subjects to produce digit series as random as possible, and is simple and adequate to use in psychiatric practice. There are several different methods for number generation, including oral and written methods, each of which reveals different aspect of information processing. Although disturbance of random generation is reported in some psychiatric disorders, schizophrenic patients manifest marked and characteristic defect. Not only biases for counting-up and counting-down but also spatial non-randomness in written matrix are observed, possibly reflecting sensory information processing deficits in schizophrenia. Random number generation is related to multiple brain sites including frontal cortex, where reduced blood flow responses are observed in schizophrenia. However, relations between non-randomness and schizophrenic symptoms, social dysfunction, and frontal hemodynamics are not simple, and future research is necessary to reveal the psychological significance of random generation disturbance in schizophrenia.
