Abstract(in English) | In this paper, a photonic nanocavity with a calculated modal volume V of 0.71(λ_0/n)^3 (where λ_0 is the wavelength of light in air) and an ultrahigh experimental Q factor of 100,000, is demonstrated. We discovered an important new design rule, that the envelope function of the mode profile in the cavity should gently vary whilst remaining spatially localized, and utilized this in the design of the cavity structure. Accordingly, we propose a point-defect cavity in a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab, where the arrangement of six air holes near the cavity edges is fine-tuned. Using the 3D FDTD method, we demonstrate that the Q factor for the designed cavity increases by a factor of 50 relative to that for a cavity without displaced air holes, while the modal volume remains almost constant. By measurement of the radiation spectrum from the fabricated point-defect cavity and the transmission spectrum through a waveguide near the defect, we demonstrate that the Q factor of the designed cavity increases by a factor of 20. Q/V for this structure is significantly higher than for any other previously reported nanocavity. |
