Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To predict sensory input or motor output, a need for extracting information from a single-trial activity of a neuronal population has been growing. For this purpose, it is essential to develop algorithms that estimate the input or output in real time. The algorithms are useful to develop brain-machine interfaces. We developed an algorithm to extract visual information from spike trains of a population of neurons recorded in the monkey inferior-temporal (IT) cortex. We calculated mean squared error between a trial function which was obtained by a spike train in a single arbitrary trial convoluted by a Gaussian distribution and template vectors which had mean activity in the remaining trials. On average for about 70.4% of trials, the estimated stimulus matched with the actual stimulus. We also applied principal component analysis to a single-trial activity of the neurons. Using first principal component, the accuracy was 15.5%. The accuracy increased as the number of principal components increased. Using 19 principal components, the accuracy was 61.5%. Using all principal components, the accuracy was 70.4%. This result suggests that the information of the visual stimuli might be extracted from a single-trial activity of the neuronal population in the IT cortex.
