Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Synchronized network oscillations in the range of gamma (Whittington et al., 1995) and theta (Fujiwara-Tsukamoto et al., 2001) are known to be elicited by tetanic stimulation in the rat hippocampal slice. Here, we investigated the spatial distribution of the oscillations in the theta range (2-7 Hz) using a voltage-sensitive dye and 16×16 photodiodes. A stimulating electrode was placed at the stratum radiatum in the CA1 area. Evoked oscillations were observed throughout the CA1 area and the subiculum on a spatial scale of > 1.5mm, but not in the dentate gyrus and in the entorhinal cortex. Tight synchrony of the oscillatory potential was found over all layers in the CA1 region. To characterize this tight synchrony may contribute to solve the "binding problem".
