Abstract(in English) | Recently, integration of 3rd generation (3G) cellular systems and wireless local area networks (WLAN) has been developed. It is expected to provide seamless services between the two wireless infrastructures to mobile users. What are needed for the integration are dual-mode mobile terminals, which have both 3G and WLAN interfaces. In 3G-WLAN integrated environments, if the dual-mode mobile terminals become gateways between 3G and WLANs, 3G mobile terminals can send packets to WLAN access points via dual-mode mobile terminals and WLAN mobile terminals can also access 3G base stations. In this paper, we propose a novel network control mechanism in the 3G-WLAN integrated packet-relay networks. The mechanism gives rules for mobile terminals to relay packets. Each mobile terminal, according to the rules, chooses paths (1-hop or 2-hop) and controls opportunities to connect each other. We design the rules to expand coverage of WLANs, to decrease dead spots in 3G, or to reduce traffic load of 3G. In this paper, the objective of the network control is called "networking policy", and the combination of the packet-relay rules is defined as "cooperation rule". We evaluate the proposed mechanism through computer simulations. The results verify that some cooperation rules we design achieve their networking policies. |
