Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We study a rural village, Kaminaguri-Kogumi, which was in South Kanto in Japan in the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate. It is especially studied, what kind of structure was sustained in the village, and how the structure was kept via their marriage actions. For this study, we use Shumon-Aratamecho which describes marriage relations, household incomes, and so on. With analysis of the data, we show that the village was hierarched to three layers, top, intermediate and bottom. These three layers indicate different intensions against marriage partners. The top and bottom layers intend to partners with comparably far village, while intermediate layer shows concentration of intension on neighbors. We propose this differentiation of connection must be a driving force of the hierarchicalization of the internal structure of the village.
