Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The second-order nonlinearity of optical fiber is expected for applications to second-harmonic generators, optical modulators, or switches. We studied the second-order nonlinearity of silica fiber having side tunnels induced by poling with electrode wires put into the tunnels. For quasi-phase matching, we proposed to remove the second-order nonlinearity periodically by ultraviolet irradiation through a patterned mask by depoling. In the experiment, a KrF excimer laser was used to irradiate the poled.fiber through a silica mask with a chromium stripe pattern with a period of 40 urn. By tilting the mask, the effective period on the fiber was adjusted to 42 urn, the coherence length of silica at a 1.06-μm fundamental wavelength. The second-harmonic light of a Q-switched Nd^<3+>:YAG laser was measured. The measured second-harmonic power increased to 9 times by quasi-phase matching with periodic depoling by irradiation with a KrF excimer laser.
