Thermal Quenching Property of Blue Phosphors for PDPs

Abstract(in English) The purpose of this study is to clarify the thermal quenching property of blue phosphors. The temperature dependence of the emission intensities of europium in calcium magnesium silicate (CaMgSi_2O_6 : Eu^<2+>, CMS : Eu^<2+>) and barium magnesium aluminate (BaMgAl_<10>O_<17> : Eu^<2+>, BAM : Eu^<2+>) under the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation were investigated. It was found that the emission intensity at 373K were decreased to 55 % compared with that at 298K for CMS : Eu^<2+> whereas 98% for BAM : Eu^<2+> at 373K. In order to use CMS : Eu^<2+> in plasma display panels, the improvement of its thermal quenching property is needed. Otherwise, the optimization of the panel structure or the discharge method which would ultimately induce a lower temperature at the phosphor layers is required.
