Comparison of 1-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional Microwave Radiative Transfer Models by Using TRMM PR Data

Abstract(in English) To retrieve rain rate from microwave brightness temperature measured with TMI (TRMM Microwave Imager) onboard TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission) satellite, it is indispensable to calculate microwave brightness temperatures for several rain conditions using a radiative transfer model. Rain area has a three dimensional structure, and microwaves in that area propagate to various directions suffering from attenuation, absorption, scattering. So the brightness temperature varies in accordance with the horizontal as well as vertical structures of rain. This paper evaluates the influence of structure of rain area by calculating microwave brightness temperatures with one- and three-dimensional radiative transfer models using TRMM PR rain data. Comparisons are also made between the measured and calculated brightness temperatures. In consequence, the brightness temperatures obtained from three-dimensional model is higher than that of one-dimensional model particularly at high frequency, and there is difference of behavior at the fore or back side of rain area. Though there is some bias in comparison with measured data, it is meaningful that the comparison of one- and three-dimensional models becomes possible. It is necessary to improve the models by adding the wave model of sea surface etc.
