3-D SAR measurements of crustal deformation due to earthquake and volcanic activity in California, USA

抄録(英) A complete description of deformation of the Earth's surface due to various natural and man-made sources (e.g., earthquake and volcanic activity, geothermal recovery, water pumping) requires knowledge of the three-dimensional (3-D) vector displacement field. We present results of measurements of crustal deformation in California, USA, using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. The SAR data from the ascending and descending orbits are used to generate contiguous maps of three orthogonal components (East, North, Up) of the co-seismic surface displacement field for several major earthquakes, including the 1992 Landers, and 1999 Hector Mine events. The co-seismic displacement fields exhibit symmetries with respect to the rupture plane that are suggestive of a linear relationship between stress and strain in the crust. 3-D deformation measurements are crucial for constraining the depth and geometry of the subsurface magma reservoirs in neovolcanic areas.
