Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Fiber optic receptacles consisting of an optical component so called "fiber stub" have been extensively used for optical communication devices such as transmitters and receivers. The conventional fiber stubs are fabricated with an organic adhesive for fixing optical fiber in the ferrules, and consequently include some problems in their reliability and production efficiency. The polishing of optical connecting face is also a complexity in the production process. Newly developed stubs, VitroStub, are inorganic composite materials that are produced by fusion of glasses with glass-ceramics, therefore, the reliability and production efficiency are greatly improved because of their adhesive-free structure. Furthermore, in VitroStub, low-loss optical connection can be achieved without polishing the connecting face, utilizing the spontaneously formed spherical glass surface. In this paper we report reliabilities of VitroStub and VS-receptacle that is installed with VitroStub.
