Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes an input support method using speech recognition aiming to encourage active use of personal computers by persons unfamiliar/inexperienced with computer keyboards. The keyboard input method is a burden for older novice PC users, and it is one of the factors preventing active PC use by such users. Speech is an easy-to-use and effective input method. When the recognition is failed, ordinary speech input interface asks users to speak again in order to acquire the right information, and the process of recognition and confirmation is repeated. However, when the users are not knowledgeable of speech recognition mechanism, it is difficult for them to understand the task requirements from the system or the appropriate loudness. In such case, the recognition would keep failing and the task could not be completed in many occasions even when the input process is repeated. Given this fact, this paper proposes a speech input interface in which the system identifies the possible causes of errors from the speech characteristics of older persons and provides solutions to a better recognition in the input guidance. As the causes of errors in recognition, the length of a speech input, loudness of utterance, and whether a user is listening to the guidance until the end before start speaking are focused, and building an interface system in which a novice user could use easily is aimed. From an evaluation experiment with older novice users, it is found out that the proposed interface system is able to improve operational performance by large degree compared to the keyboard interface and ordinary speech input interface which only requests for the re-input repeatedly.
