Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To investigate the brain activity during human recognition of symbols and words both of which have the same meaning, the authors recorded electroencephalograms (EEGs) from subjects in viewing arrows or Chinese characters presented on the CRT and directing to the directions (Upward, Downward, Leftward or Rightward) that they mean. As a result, the reaction time for directing was almost equal, when arrows were presented, regardless of the directions which they mean. However, for all the directions, the reaction time for word presentation was longer than that for arrow presentation. The reaction time for the word meaning upward or downward was a little shorter than those for other words. Furthermore, for both of arrows and words, the peak latencies of visual evoked potentials (VEPs) for the opposite directions (e.g., upward and downward) were almost the same, while their polarities were in reverse.
