Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We built an experimental setup to monitor the liquid/frozen state of samples using millimeter waves. The setup consists of a 35 GHz Gunn oscillator producing about 10mW of output power, two horn antennas, and a power meter. We confirmed that the difference in absorption between water and ice is significant, and we could discriminate and monitor the liquid/frozen state both for water and for a cell medium with DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide). We also measured the absorption of frozen cell media with different DMSO concentrations. These experiments demonstrated the possibility of applying millimeter waves to discriminate the crystalline structure of various combinations of cell media and DMSO concentrations.
