A Study of EMI Suppression Characteristics of Ferrite Cores

Abstract(in English) Small ferrite cores are usually attached to the mains cables of electronic equipment for suppressing conducted disturbance currents. However there is no appropriate measuring system available for evaluating their EMI suppression characteristics. Hence, cores in practical application have been chosen by the trial-and-error method because there is no guideline on their use. Hence, theoretical and experimental analyses are carried out to develop an appropriate method for evaluating the EMI suppression capability of the cores used in practical situations. First, a transmission line type measuring system (Z_0=400ohm) is proposed for frequencies from 15 to 60MHz simulating the compliance test setup for conducted emission. Then, theoretical expressions are derived to evaluate the EMI suppression characteristics of a ferrite core. In addition, experimental studies are also made using a simulated EUT to prove the validity of those theoretical equations. Finally, based on these investigations, it is concluded that EMI suppression ferrite cores should be characterized with the S-parameters measured using the proposed measurement setup. In some applications, the impedance of the core might be used in place of the S-parameters. In practical application of ferrite cores, cores should be selected for specific frequencies by using the theoretical equations with the measured S-parameters of the cores.
