Abstract(in English) | In this paper, we analyze the effect of the retransmitted packet size preservation (RPSP) property that all transferred packets at (re-) transmissions have the same size as that at the original transmission, i.e., identical to the packet generated from a message, over wireless networks supporting a reliable communication protocol (RCP). Thus, we investigated the effect of RPSP for IEEE 802.11b, RLC and TCP as RCPs with the appropriate message size distributions, obtained from measurements, under various conditions (e.g., different payload sizes l_d and mean burst bit-error lengths). The key findings from the numerical results include 1) when we use IEEE 802.11b as an RCP with IP, in l_d=1500 bytes (i.e., standard MTU size for LANs), the effect of RPSP can not be negligible for high mean bit-error rates (e.g., 1×10^<-4>, which is the mean bit-error rate of a wireless channel in an industrial environment), 2) in the case of TCP with HTTP, for l_d=1460 bytes (common MSS value used for TCP), the effect of RPSP is less strong, compared to that of IEEE 802.11b, 3) in the case of RLC with l_d=40 bytes, the effect of RPSP almost disappears, and 4) large burst bit-error length causes weakness of the effect of RPSP. |
