Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The recording density of hard disk drives (HDDs) has been increased 50 million times since the first hard disk drive was introduced to the computer. A slowdown in the increase in areal storage density in HDDs has been apparent in the last 2 years. This slow down is not only a consequence of the so-called "superparamagnetic" limit, but also the engineering issues of magnetic head itself and HDI technology. At the moment, in spite of progress of perpendicular magnetic recording, we can not draw any clear roadmap for the over 200 Gbit/in^2 magnetic recording. Typical candidates are heat assisted magnetic recording and patterned media. Heat assisted magnetic recording is very interesting as the research objectives, because of their extendibility due to the various combination of heat source, write/read head configuration and media structure. Patterned media has an advantage over the conventional media in being free from the media noise due to the irregularity of the magnetic cluster configurations, and allowing larger switching unit of island bit rather than a crystal grain, resulting in higher stability of the recorded information against the thermal excitation. Then, patterned media is a gentle technology to the write head. Need the strategic choice for the future recording technology.
