Abstract(in English) The higher energy term of magnetic anisotropy, K_, which is theoretically predicted to enhance thermal stability without a notable change in switching field, is discussed for CoPtCr-SiO_2 perpendicular recording media. It was revealed that the values of K_ (the first order energy term) and K_ vary significantly with the seed layer material used. The ratio of K_ to K_ increases as the c/a of hcp-CoPtCr lattice increases, indicating that the appearance of K_ is related to the elongation of hcp-lattice or an increase in the stacking fault density. No significant change in the value of K_/K_ was observed by the addition of SiO_2 to the CoPtCr films. It was concluded that CoPtCr films have a sufficient potential in the values of K_ and K_ for high density perpendicular media.
