Transmission System of Depth Information for Improving Free Viewpoint VoD Images

Abstract(in English) We have proposed the "Free Viewpoint VoD system" which transmits the image from one viewpoint and depth map from the server to the client, and reconstructs image from any viewpoint on the client. In conventional method, the depth map was compressed by MPEG-4 and transmitted. But, when the compression ratio became high, there was a problem that distortion appeared especially on the boundary between foreground region and background region in the reconstructed images. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes new method that extracts the exact background region using background mask, and compresses the background mask by JBIG with simple motion compensation and transmits in addition to depth. The our method can reduce the required amount of data transmitting without spoiling the accuracy of a reconstructed image.
