Error Probability Performance of Optical Communication Systems using Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Abstract(in English) When implementing optical satellite communication systems, restriction of transmission power is a major issue, and in order to get high reliability of the channel, using error correcting codes is indispensable. In earlier literatures much attention has been devoted to applying Reed-Solomon codes, BCH codes and convolutional codes, etc. to optical communication systems [1], [2]. In this paper, we focus on the characteristic of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes which have the powerful error correcting capability, in optical communication systems. We apply Gaussian approximation of avalanche photodiode (APD) output modeling and three (3, 6)-regular LDPC codes whose codelength N=18 ; 996 ; 4998, respectively, and code rate is 0.5, into the direct detection optical communication system using On-Off-Keying modulation (OOK) and an APD detector, and investigate the relation between error probability performance and system parameters by Monte Carlo simulations.
