Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Orientational ordering process of 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) molecules on silica substrates covered with mono-/multi-layered Kapton-type polyimide LB films were determined, in situ, by orientational order parameter Sn (n=1,2,3). The polarized absorption measurements (PAM) and the second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements were employed to determine S2 and S1(or S3), respectively. It was found that 5CB molecules tend to lose centrosymmetry while molecules tend to orient their molecular-long axis parallel to substrate surface as the number of polyimide LB layers increases.
