Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The projective distortion is caused when taking a picture of the characters written in the curved surface. Therefore, the character strings arranged in the straight line become rounded due to the angle of taking a picture. In this paper, we propose a method to extract the curved character strings. The input image is initially binarized in order to extract character regions. Because of the high contrast between character regions and background, we adopted a local threshold technique on the extracted edge image for binarization. The character-string-candidates are then extracted from the binary image using the size and proximity of characters in strings. Finally, these string-candidates are extended to expect character strings using distance and height thresholds of the neighboring candidates. The experimental result demonstrates the potentiality of the proposed approach that extracts the curved character strings including the extraction accuracy with 44.1% precision and 52.3% recall.
