Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A sample with a certain amount of volume is usually employed for sound speed measurements. However, like a natural fiber and human hair, there exit materials that can be only in a shape of thread. In the present article, employing thin wires, human hairs and threads, the measurement of the sound speed in a thread whose diameter is smaller than 0.2 mm has been attempted. Preparing two cylindrical ceramic transducers with a 300-kHz resonance frequency, a glass bead with a penetrating hole to be knotted by a sample thread is bonded to the center of the end surface of each transducer. After connecting these transducers with a sample thread, a receiving transducer is attached at a ceiling so as to hang another transmitting transducer with the thread. A glass bead is bonded to another end surface of the transmitting transducer so that the tension varied with a hanged weigh can be applied to the sample thread. The time delay of the received signal with respect to the transmitting pulse is measured while gradually shortening the length. The sound speed is determined by the rate of time delay change. The measured values for metallic wires are somewhat different from the values derived from the density and Young's modulus cited in references, but are repeatedly measurable ones. The sound speed for human hairs of over twenty samples that disperses between 2300 m/s and 2500 m/s seems to depend on the hair quality. The sound speed to approach a constant value under large tension is also measured for a cotton thread.
