Comparison between Irregular LDPC and Turbo Codes Considering Number of Iterations of Decoder in OFDM Broadband Packet Wireless Access

Abstract(in English) This paper investigates the relation between the average packet error rate (PER) performance and the average number of inerations for the iterative decoding in Irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code for downlink OFDM broadband packet wireless access in a multipath fading channel. In the investigation, the average number of iterations is calculated by taking into account the stop in the iterative decoding based on parity check result, and we parameterized the channel encoding block size, the coding rate, R, and the data modulation schemes, respectively. Simulation results show that, for Irregular LDPC code using belief propagation (BP) algorithm with 50 iterations at maximum, the average number of iterations is sensitive to the employed coding rate rather than the encoding block size and data modulation schemes. In this case, the average number of iterations is approximately 8, 5, and 4 times for R=1/2, 3/4, and 8/9, respectively, under the condition of the average received signal energy per bit-to-noise power density ratio (E_b/N_0) for achieving the average PER of 10^<-2>. Consequently, while achieving the almost same average PER performance between Irregular LDPC and Turbo codes, the decoding complexity of Irregular LDPC code assuming the average number of iterations is reduced by 17, 8, and 4% for R=1/2, 3/4 and 8/9, respectively, compared to that of Turbo code using Log-MAP decoding algorithm with 8 iterations.
