Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is important for railway signalling, which secures safety of railways, to achieve an acceptable reliability for daily operation. Various kinds of reliability-related technologies have become essential, because advanced technologies in electronics, communication and information have recently been adopted in railway signalling. In this paper, the reliability-related technologies that are adopted in train control and equipment monitoring are discussed. Firstly, the fault tolerant computing (FTC) technology, which has been used in COMputer aided TRAffic Control (COMTRAC) system of the Tokaido Shinkansen, is reviewed. Secondly, the trade-off between safety and reliability in equipment monitoring is also discussed, based on the lessons learned through developing the damage-detecting sensor for level crossing barriers.
