Development of an assistive system for selecting control-interface switches and its performance evaluation

Abstract(in English) Control-interface switches are widely used by persons with physical disabilities for operating electrical devices, such as computer and nurse call system. In order to select an optimum switch for a particular person with disabilities, the "adaptation work" is carried out presently. Such work is not necessarily easy to be accomplished, because both well-trained adaptation-workers and facilities are not usually available. In order to simplify such an adaptation process, we have been developing a computer-aided system capable of selecting control-interface switches. In an attempt to verify its clinical applicability, we carried out several experiments in which the switches were selected for six subjects with different disabilities. Then, selected switches were evaluated from clinical perspectives regarding the adaptation. Empirical results suggested that easy-to-use control-interface switches for clients could be selected by simply inputting client's physical conditions to the system.
