Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes fast-forward/rewind functions for Web-reading softwares aiming to convey an outline of web page swiftly and location of important information in the page efficiently to users with visual disability. For such web users who cannot grasp the whole image of a page visually, existing screen readers provide functions to speak only links, or speak and move by a specified unit such as sentences and characters. However, when the essential information is not marked as links or the long text is presented, such users have to listen to the whole page being spoken to acquire desired information and therefore it becomes a time-consuming task. The method proposed in this paper is characterized in the way that it allows users to decide the length of the unit to skip forward or rewind and also the position to stop the moving cursor. Through the study involving subjects with varying PC proficiency, it is found out that novice users can operate more efficiently when the unit length is smaller, and they can find the desired information. On the other hand, the operation time can be shortened by a large amount compared to the existing screen readers for experienced users especially when presented text is long and the users are allowed to decide the stop positions themselves.
