Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We are developing a method which transforms auditory signals into vibrations in the same patterns over time for perception by hearing- impaired people. The feature of this method is that the system does not recognize auditory signals but user recognize auditory signals by vibrations. This paper is part of a wider investigation of auditory signals into vibrations as a support for hearing-impaired people in their daily lives. We start by evaluating the difference between hearing-impaired people and people with normal hearing in terms of the rate of correct identification of different patterns of vibrations. The result indicates that the ability of hearing-impaired people is equal in this regard to that of people with normal hearing. We also investigate how prior presentation of concept of the auditory signals to the hearing-impaired subjects affected their ability to interpret the patterns. The result was a marked improvement in the ability to recognize the auditory signals for which success rates were low in the earlier experiment.
